1° NaQ World Discus Congress

Napoli Aquatica always wanted to be, since it was just a project in embryo, something that would go beyond a simple trade fair and exhibition area.
Napoli Aquatica wants to make fertile ground to grow the aquarium culture, without which we can’t have a high and qualified  market level.

In chronological order, first invested in trying to create a show made by important people, that through professionalism would give a baseline of quality.
Tried to “dress” the event with a side of business lectures by important and worthy people of the sector.

On this basis we have tried to create the conditions to exploit the presence of illustrious people, coming from different parts of the world that represented an important school of thought of the discus’ world, setting up what was certainly an important and I dare to say, historical event:

The World Discus Congress 2010.

In the day 09/24/2010 in the meeting room of the “Jambo1” mall that hosted the fair, gathered around the table the judges, jury presidents and a representative of the organization of the event whom was an observer. NAQCongress_small
This is the complete list of the participants:
  • Carmelo Aricò;
  • Heiko Bleher;
  • Rosario Curcio;
  • Sergey Goryushkin;
  • Patriz Hilsenbeck;
  • Christian Pedone;
  • Andrew Soh;
  • Sebastiano Solano;
  • Jeffery Tan.

The daily agenda was:
  1. the categorization of discus in the competition, wild forms and breeding forms;
  2. judging criteria for each category;
  3. the System Point to apply in the discus competition;
  4. is the discus with more points the most beautiful?.

Each participant said his way of thinking, explaining in general terms his idea on the topics covered. Each participant was helpful for the discussion and added something more to the dynamics of the final result.

After discussing the ideas offered by everyone, we all agreed that the categorization of the show needed to be simplified  and adapted to the country in which takes place, and must be strictly related to the number of  fish in the competition.

We were all in agreement that every host country is entitled to include or exclude a category based on the actual popularity of that variety and on the basis of a sufficient number of participants that can justify the formation of the category.

We were all in agreement to maintain the 4 categories of wild:
  • Heckel;
  • Brown;
  • Blue;
  • Green.
For those countries where there aren’t a sufficient number of participants to justify the 4 categories, they can be amalgamated into a single category, called Wild.

Obviously, in countries in which these fish are not represented, the category can be deleted.

The category Red turquoise and Striped Turquoise, we agreed can be merged into a single category, called Stripe Turquoise.

All the participants agreed that is very difficult to find specimens that have all the characteristics to be called Red Turquoise.

The category Solid Blue is confirmed.

The category Solid Red will be renamed simply with the name Red.
In this category can join all those discus that have a dominant red tint, tending to the completeness of the colour, even though they may have white face or small areas of the body or fins that are not completely red.

We all agreed to add two Pattern categories, one with thick lines,
the other with fine lines.

Within our discussion some participants wanted to point out that for a better understanding, how is it wrong in the case of fish with this pattern, to talk about fine and thick lines, because this is just a pattern.

We all agreed that if there are any conditions, the category of Yellow can be added.

The Spotted category will be unique and will join this category actually spotted discus, with an even distribution of the colour.

We are in agrement with the inclusion of an Albino category, that can be divided into two groups: Solid and Pattern, in case in the country in which the show takes place there are the conditions.

The Unclassifiable category remains confirmed to which will join in fish that can not be placed in other categories.
About what previously said on the exact denomination of this category, it may not be absolutely called Open, that would give a different meaning to the real nature of the category.

Following this long and interesting discussion, in which as previously said, different prospective have enriched the contents, it was impossible to deal with the steps 2, 3 and 4 of our agenda
and that will surely be subjects of the II World Discus congress.
